Abstract
Introduction. Road traffic accidents are a significant cause of mortality in Honduras. The estimation of Years of Life Lost (YLL) allows quantifying premature mortality and guiding preventive interventions when stratified by sex, age, and victim role. Methods. A retrospective longitudinal descriptive study was conducted to estimate the Years of Life Lost (YLL) due to road traffic accidents in Honduras between 2013 and 2023. YLL were calculated following the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) methodology, stratified by sex, age group, and victim role. Data were obtained from anonymized records from the National Observatory of Violence (ONV). Temporal patterns and differences across population subgroups were analyzed. Results. Between 2013 and 2023, road traffic accidents in Honduras resulted in 16,518 deaths and 362,198 YLL, of which 82.9% (n = 300,353) occurred among men. In this group, the highest age-standardized YLL rates were observed in motorcycle drivers (1,968.9) and pedestrians (1,830.0). Among women, the highest contributions corresponded to pedestrians (477.3) and vehicle passengers (388.0). Conclusion. Road traffic accidents generated a high YLL burden in Honduras, with patterns differing by sex and victim role. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions based on the victims’ risk profiles.
