El Amigo de la Patria, in remembrance of its second centenary of publication

Abstract

The newspaper El Amigo de la Patria was the first of multiple editorial projects by the man who was aptly called by both friends and adversaries in Central America during the first half of the nineteenth century a sage: José Cecilio Díaz del Valle (1777–1834). The complete edition consisted of 48 issues published from October 16, 1820, to March 1, 1822, in what was the first major editorial project undertaken by the national hero Valle. Initially, its periodicity was weekly, which was partially fulfilled during the first semester, becoming more intermittent from September 1821 onward, surely due to the multiple responsibilities Valle had as one of the principal officials of the Central American government that led the nation newly independent from Spanish colonial rule during those first moments as a free and sovereign nation.
