An integrative look at three climate risks to health in the Dominican Republic

Abstract

Introduction. The Dominican Republic, the third most populous country among the Caribbean islands, boasts sensitive ecosystems of national parks, beaches, mountain ranges that include the three highest peaks in the Caribbean, and agricultural productivity. In recent decades, the Dominican Republic has experienced the effects of climate change, in addition to accelerated urban population growth, impacting vulnerability (overcrowding and limited housing, scarcity of services) and exposure to infectious diseases and environmental pollution. Case presentation. Three main national environmental threats to health are described, including extreme weather events and air and water pollution, which can increase morbidity and mortality rates. Discussion. Specific actions taken to strengthen policies, laws, and regulations related to climate change mitigation and adaptation in the country are presented. Conclusion. It is essential to promote collaborations among the various national ministries that incorporate the One Health concept, spaces for policy coordination, use of geospatial data, and leadership capacity development as a strategy for preventing and strengthening responses to the effects of climate change.
